Description

Equetus lanceolatus, commonly known as the Jack-knifefish, is small/medium fish from the drums and croaker family. These fish are cream-white (very young yellow which sometimes remains a little as they mature) with three very dark brown to black bands running over their body. The most characteristic feature about this fish is off course their dorsal fin. This is really high but also not very broad as seen in many other fish with a high dorsal fin. This fin is also where the common name is derived from, because the shape of the fish looks like a jackknife.

They can be a bit shy in the beginning and also picky with eating, but live food usually triggers them to come out and eat. In nature they feed mainly on small shrimps, crabs and bristle worms, so try food like brine shrimps and mysis when they're not eating wel. Later on you can wean them on frozen food and if you're lucky maybe even dry food. Tank bred specimens are way easier to wean on food. Once settled these fish aren't shy at all anymore and can help to keep your bristle worm population under control. Be careful with small ornamental shrimps though!

This fish is Tank Bred and will adapt to your aquarium easier compared to a wild caught specimen!
