Ammonia MR Checker
HI715 Details:
The HI-715 Medium Range Ammonia Checker provides an effective way to measure ammonia in freshwater aquariums. Using a digital water tester for ammonia ensures accurate, reliable results from testing, allowing you to swiftly make water adjustments to keep your fish tank healthy.
This Hanna Checker covers a range of 0 to 9.99 ppm. The Checkers range includes testers for ammonia covering the high, medium and low ranges to suit your requirements.
- 0.00 to 9.99 ppm
- Ammonia
The HI-715 Checker is an accurate and reliable digital tester for measuring ammonia within freshwater, making it an ideal option for use in freshwater aquariums. This simple, easy-to-use Checker requires a 10 ml sample of water from your tank and features a single-button operation for fast digital testing results to give you immediate insight into the ammonia levels in your aquarium.
The HI-715 digital tester covers a medium range for ammonia testing, from 0.00-9.99 ppm. A single included AAA battery is required for continual testing, with an auto power-off feature after 10 minutes of inactivity to further prolong battery life.
Why measure ammonia?
Ammonia is produced in fish tanks through natural processes, including excretion from the gills, urine and faeces of fish, alongside the decomposition of organic matter and food within the aquarium. Too much ammonia can cause burns to the skin and scales of fish and reduces their ability to filter oxygen effectively through their gills. High ammonia levels also lead to algae growth, which in turn affects pH levels in your tank.
Measuring ammonia with this accurate digital colorimeter tester allows you to immediately see the levels of this parameter in your tank. With prompt, accurate information, you can make swift changes to protect your tank and ensure your fish have the correct water chemistry levels within the aquarium for optimal health.
How does the HI-715 work?
The HI-715 uses an adaptation of the ASTM Manual of water and Environmental Technology D1426-93, Nessler Method. In this method, the reagents that are provided with the Checker are added to the sample vial to create a measurable reaction. The reaction between ammonia and reagents causes a yellow tint in the sample, which is then read by the Checker to provide a clear, digital readout of ammonia levels in parts per million.
The HI-715 includes a reagents starter kit for 25 tests, so you can start testing the ammonia in your aquarium immediately out of the box.
Four steps to test
1. ‘Zero’ the Checker with your vial & 10 ml water sample inside
2. Take your vial out and add your reagent
3. Place your vial into your Checker
4. Press the button and read the results
Checkers vs test strips
Many aquarium owners use test strips as an affordable option for measuring key parameters in aquariums. However, test strips are less accurate and can lead to the under or over-dosing of tank water. Checkers provide a clear digital readout from testing, with no guesswork required to identify the colour of a strip. For accurate, reliable results that you can trust to help you protect and preserve your aquarium, Hanna Checkers are the ideal solution.

HI-715-11 is a high-quality set of calibration standards that allows users to validate the Ammonia Medium Range Checker® HC – HI-715. The HI-715-11 includes one sealed cuvette for zero ppm ammonia and one cuvette that is tinted to an equivalent 6.0 +/- 0.2 ppm ammonia sample @ 25°C. The calibration check set is produced using reagent grade chemicals in a temperature controlled environment.
HI715-25 Details
The HI-715-25 are the replacement reagents for the HI-715 Ammonia Medium Range Checker® HC.
The HI-715-25 are high-quality reagents that are pre-measured, allowing for users to achieve fast and accurate measurements with their Ammonia Medium Range Checker® HC. These reagents follow the Nessler Method in which the reaction between ammonia and reagents causes a yellow tint in the sample.
By simply adding 4 drops from each bottle of the HI-715-25 reagent set to the sample, the reaction will take place and the HI-715 will determine the concentration from the colour that is produced. The results will be displayed in ppm (mg/L) of ammonia-nitrogen (NH3-N). These reagents are designed to be used with samples that have an expected range of 0.00 to 9.99 ppm ammonia-nitrogen. To convert the reading to ppm of ammonia (NH3) multiply the result by 1.214.

Tip for an accurate measurement
It is important that the sample does not contain any debris.
Whenever the cuvette is placed into the measurement cell, it must be dry outside and completely free of fingerprints, oil or dirt. Wipe it thoroughly with HI-731318 or a lint-free cloth prior to insertion.
Shaking the cuvette can generate bubbles, causing higher readings. To obtain accurate measurements, remove such bubbles by swirling or by gently tapping the cuvette.
Do not let the reacted sample stand for too long after reagent is added, or accuracy will be lost.
After the reading, it is important to discard the sample immediately, otherwise the glass might become permanently stained.
