Description

After witnessing firsthand the changes in the Florida reef ecosystem that followed the near extinction of the longspine sea urchin Diadema antillarum in the early 1980s, Martin A. Moe, Jr. saw a need to develop the techniques required to breed and mass culture this critically important species. He set up a small experimental marine culture laboratory in a spare room of his house in the Florida Keys where, after eleven years of work he was successful, despite many challenges. His work will forever be instrumental in future coral reef restoration efforts in the tropical western Atlantic and Caribbean. This manual recounts the trials, discoveries, successes, mysteries, and thorny problems along the path to understanding the larval life of Diadema antillarum, and is intended as a reference guide for researchers continuing the work with this species.

About the Author

Martin A. Moe, Jr. holds a master's degree from University of South Florida and his scientific and popular articles and books date back to 1962, when he began his career as a marine biologist for the State of Florida. He entered the private sector and developed the basic technology for breeding Florida pompano in 1970, then accomplished the first commercial culture of Ocellaris Clownfish and Neon Gobies in a garage in 1972. Over the years Martin has bred more than 30 species of marine tropical fish, even hybridizing French and Grey Angelfish at the first commercial ornamental marine hatchery, Aqualife Research Corporation, which he founded in 1973. Martin and his wife Barbara founded Green Turtle Publications in 1982 to write and publish books on the marine aquarium hobby. Moe is the author of a definitive book on tropical Atlantic lobsters, Lobsters: Florida, The Bahamas, the Caribbean, as well as his popular and best-selling marine aquarium books, Marine Aquarium Handbook: Beginner to Breeder and The Marine Aquarium Reference: Systems and Invertebrates. Other books he authored are Breeding the Orchid Dottyback: An Aquarist's Journal and (with his wife, Barbara) The Marine Aquarist's Quiz Book.
