A UV unit is used to kill floating algae, floating bacteria and parasites, resulting in clearer water. Killing parasites is very important in a (marine) aquarium with sensitive fish. Think of doctor fish in a marine aquarium. These fish are very sensitive to parasites when stressed. When you reduce parasites by means of a UV unit, the risk of contamination of the fish is much lower.
