Arothron hispidus, commonly known as the White-spotted puffer, is a beautiful large pufferfish, which can also be found in brackish waters. They’ve a white to cream-white belly and get darker towards the back. Some have a more greyish to brown colour, other more greenish. In the dark areas they’ve white spots which closer to the belly become stripes. When stressed or at night, a mottled pattern forms over the dark area. The fins are clear to yellow, with the pectoral fins usually showing the most yellow.

Pufferfishes are very intelligent fish and will quickly learn to recognize you and your behaviour. Their intelligence and behaviour make you soon treat these animals more like a dog than a fish. Combined with the unusual shape, they make up a showpiece in every tank!

Remember they aren’t reef safe though! They feed on almost anything they can catch, like crab, molluscs, worms, echinoderms, sponges, tunicates, all kinds of algae from coralline to fleshy and corals. It can be aggressive towards other fish, so make sure you pick the other fishes with care!
