Coradion melanopus

Coradion melanopus, commonly known as the Twospot coralfish, is a small butterflyfish which looks very similar to C. muelleri and a bit like the more well-known C. rostratus. Their base colour is white with  4 vertical bands that are brownish in the dorsal fin and more rusty brown on the body till black in the pelvic fins. The last band looks like two orange stripes with a greyish stripe in the middle. They've a black spot in the beginning of the dorsal fin and a brown or black stripe at the caudal fin base. But the easiest way to tell them apart from the other Coradion species is that they've two eye-spots. One in the back of the dorsal fin and one in the anal fin.

These fish are quite peaceful, to most other fish, but might haress similar looking fish. These fish are quite shy in nature and when first introduced in a tank, so they can best be introduced before active and/or large fish are introduced. They live usually solitary or in pairs in in a wide variety of habitats, but most common along drop-offs rich in sponge growth. In an aquarium they can best be kept alone unless a proven pair can be found. Not much is known about these fish, but they're most likely real omnivores feeding on algae and all kind of small invertebrates like crustaceans and worms. But sponges likely form a large portion of their diet as well. They are known to nip on corals from time to time but usually don't do real damage. Make sure to offer them a varied diet of meaty and algae based foods and these fish will thrive in your tank!
