Chaetodon ephippium

Chaetodon ephippium, commonly known as the Saddle butterflyfish, is a beautiful large butterflyfish. Their base colour is usually cream-white to greenish with an orangish-yellow mouth and throat an purplish-blue horizontal stripes on the belly. On their back they've a huge black patch with a broad white outline. The anal and dorsal fin are mostly yellow and the caudal (and closest part of the dorsal fin) are more orange.The dorsal fin has a yellow filament. Two other distinct characteristics are the blue vertical stripe behind the gill and a light blue patch below the eye. 

These fish are quite peaceful to most other fish, but might haress similar looking fish. As juveniles they're solitary and can be found on inshore reefs. Once mature they form pairs or small groups and occur mostly in lagoons and seaward reefs. In an aquarium they can best be kept alone unless a proven pair can be bought. They're real omnivores feeding on all sort of worms, eggs, small invertebrates and algae, but they're also facultative corallivores, meaning they do eat but don't need corals. This makes them a risk in a reef tanks though, but a perfect pick for a fish-only tank! Feed them a varied diet of live and frozen meaty foods, but make sure to also include algae based foods like pellets and flakes, and they will thrive in your tank!
