Choerodon fasciatus (Australia)

Choerodon fasciatus, commonly known as the Harlequin tuskfish, is a medium sized wrasse/tuskfish. As juveniles these fish are white with brown vertical bands. The edges of the bands are more intense coloured and lean towards orange. They’ve a black spot in the anal fin, two in the dorsal fin and one in each pelvic fin.
As they grow older the bands get bright orange (Indian Ocean) or orange-red (Australia). The edges of the bands become electric blue (also more pronounced in Australian individuals), the spots disappear, and the fins become orange-red as well. They also grow their evil looking blue teeth/tusks (four on the lower jaw and two on the upper) which are used to crush mollusks, crustaceans and echinoderms. The older they get the darker the back half of the body becomes.

They can best be kept solitary and be careful combining them with closely related wrasses. Do normally do leave corals alone and thus are often kept in reef tanks, but keep in mind that they can kill most cleaner animals (snails, shrimps, sea stars, cucumbers and urchins) when they grow larger.

This is the Australian variant which is more intens coloured compared to the Indian Ocean variant!
