Gnathanodon speciosus

Gnathanodon speciosus, commonly known as the Golden trevally, is a very large schooling fish. With their adult size and schooling behaviour in mind, this fish isn't suitable for home aquaria. Although they look very attractive when small these fish are best kept in a huge public display. As juveniles these fish are golden yellow with balck vertical stripes. When they mature the body become silvery-grey and the stripes only remain on the upper half of the body in a faded form. The fins do remain yellowish in most individuals.

As juveniles they live between the tentacles of jellyfish but as adults they form large schools often seen with sharks and not shy for divers. These fish search the sand for crustaceans and other invertebrates. Small fishes are also eaten when the opportunity arises.
