Arothron diadematus, commonly known as the Masked puffer, is a beautiful medium-sized pufferfish. They’ve a white to cream-white base colour with brown to black mask from eye to eye, around the mouth and around the pectoral fins. The anal and dorsal fin are also usually a little darker. A. diadematus is sometimes also considered to be conspecific with A. nigropunctatus like A. citronella.

Pufferfishes are very intelligent fish and will quickly learn to recognize you and your behaviour. Their intelligence and behaviour make you soon treat these animals more like a dog than a fish. Combined with the unusual shape, they make up a showpiece in every tank!

Remember they aren’t reef safe though! They feed on crustaceans, molluscs, sponges, tunicates, algae and corals (especially Acropora tips, but no coral is considered safe when hungry). It can be aggressive towards other fish, so make sure you pick the other fishes with care!
