Arothron mappa (Yellow phase)

Arothron mappa, commonly known as the Map puffer, is a beautiful large pufferfish. As juveniles they’re black (more of a dark purple) with cream-white spots. As they grow larger, the spots become larger and more faded and start forming a reticulated pattern until there is more white than black. The belly is usually yellow. They also develop light and dark bands which become more pronounced as they’re stressed.

Pufferfishes are very intelligent fish and will quickly learn to recognize you and your behaviour. Their intelligence and behaviour make you soon treat these animals more like a dog than a fish. Combined with the unusual shape, they make up a showpiece in every tank!

Remember they aren’t reef safe though! They feed on almost anything they can catch, like crab, molluscs, worms, echinoderms, sponges, tunicates, all kinds of algae from coralline to fleshy and corals. It can be aggressive towards other fish, so make sure you pick the other fishes with care!

This is the yellow phase, which has much more yellow compared to a 'regular' A. mappa.
