Arothron meleagris, commonly known as the Guineafowl puffer, is a beautiful large pufferfish. As juveniles they’re black with yellow spots, but as they grow larger, their colour becomes quite variable. From black with countless white spots till fully yellow with a few black spots like A. nigropunctatus/citronellus and many forms in between where the back and/or fins are spotted and the rest yellow for example. Their body is covered in prickles which are hard to see until they inflate themselves.

Pufferfishes are very intelligent fish and will quickly learn to recognize you and your behaviour. Their intelligence and behaviour make you soon treat these animals more like a dog than a fish. Combined with the unusual shape, they make up a showpiece in every tank!

Remember they aren’t reef safe though! They feed on almost anything they can catch, like crab, molluscs, worms, echinoderms, sponges, tunicates, all kinds of algae from coralline to fleshy and corals, with tips of branching corals being their favourite meal. It can be aggressive towards other fish, so make sure you pick the other fishes with care!

This is the yellow phase, which can range from a more than usual yellow, all the way to looking like A. citronellus but with typical meleagris marking in the fins.
