Arothron nigropunctatus (Yellow phase)

Arothron nigropunctatus, commonly known as the Blackspotted puffer, is a beautiful medium-sized pufferfish. They’re vary variable in colour. Most commonly they’ve a white to greyish or beige base colour where a little yellow breaks through sometimes. But some individuals have a high degree to fully yellow and some black individuals are also known. On top of that are a variable amount of small blackspots. They’ve yellow to brown patches around the eyes, mouth, pectoral fins and anal and dorsal fin as well as those colours in their fins.

Pufferfishes are very intelligent fish and will quickly learn to recognize you and your behaviour. Their intelligence and behaviour make you soon treat these animals more like a dog than a fish. Combined with the unusual shape, they make up a showpiece in every tank!

Remember they aren’t reef safe though! They feed on crustaceans, molluscs, sponges, tunicates, algae and corals (especially Acropora tips, but no coral is considered safe when hungry). It can be aggressive towards other fish, so make sure you pick the other fishes with care! Because their teeth will grow their entire life, they need to eat hard/shelled food constantly to keep them from growing too large. Be sure to offer foods like crab, whole shrimp and snails on a regular basis.

This is the yellow phas variant, which has a yellow/orange belly!
