Xanthichthys mento, commonly known as the Redtail triggerfish, is a medium-large triggerfish. There is a clear difference between the male and female. The easiest way to differentiate them is by the color of the caudal fin. Males have a red caudal fin and yellow in the anal and dorsal fin while females have an orange caudal fin but red in the anal and dorsal fin. Other than that, males will develop a yellow to orange boday and females more of a blueish green to purple body. Both genders have clearly defined scales and horizontal blue stripes on the face. Combined with the unusual triggerfish shape and graceful swimming, a lot of people are attracted to this fish.

The best thing about this triggerfish is probably that they're plankton feeders and thus quite reef safe. They'll eat anything floating in the water, but cleaners like snails, crabs, starfish and cucumbers are usually left alone. Cleaner shrimp are also uncommon to be bothered, smaller shrimps are not safe though. Even corals are seldom toughed and the only thing you need to keep in mind is that like most other triggerfishes they do sometimes move small rocks around which can land on a priced coral. All in all this fish is probably one of the best options if you want to add a triggerfish to your tank!
