Xanthichthys auromarginatus (male)

Xanthichthys auromarginatus, commonly known as the Gilded triggerfish, is a medium-large triggerfish. There is a clear difference between the male and female. Males have a yellow rim on the dorsal, anal and caudal fin. they will also develop a blue throat/jaw which in some specimens can even look purple. Females have clear anal and dorsal fins and will only develop a red edge on the caudal fin. Combined with the unusual triggerfish shape and graceful swimming, this is an attractive fish which will swim around all day.

The best thing about this triggerfish is probably that they're plankton feeders and thus quite reef safe. They'll eat anything floating in the water, but cleaners like snails, crabs, starfish and cucumbers are usually left alone. Cleaner shrimp are also uncommon to be bothered, smaller shrimps are not safe though. Even corals are seldom toughed and the only thing you need to keep in mind is that like most other triggerfishes they do sometimes move small rocks around which can land on a priced coral. All in all this fish is probably one of the best options if you want to add a triggerfish to your tank!
