Xanthichthys ringens

Xanthichthys ringens, commonly known as the Sargassum triggerfish, is a medium-large triggerfish very similar to X. lineopunctatus and X. kiritimati. There base color is almost entirely grey, which might make it sound like a dull fish, but it's not! The dark brown spots all over the body almost forming lines. Also the blue stripes on the cheek and especially the amazing blue, red, orange and yellow in the caudal fin, combined with the unusual triggerfish shape, make it a very attractive fish!

The best thing about this triggerfish is probably that they're plankton feeders and thus quite reef safe. They'll eat anything floating in the water, but cleaners like snails, crabs, starfish and cucumbers are usually left alone. Cleaner shrimp are also uncommon to be bothered, smaller shrimps are not safe though. Even corals are seldom toughed and the only thing you need to keep in mind is that like most other triggerfishes they do sometimes move small rocks around which can land on a priced coral. All in all this fish is probably one of the best options if you want to add a triggerfish to your tank!
