DKI supplemented with Dunaliella + Haematococcus = DKI β-carotene
Addition of color enhancers to feed is a major aspect of nutrition regarding aquaculture
and ornamental fish. It has to be emphasized that color of the scales and skin is one of
the most important quality criteria dictating the market value of fish, in addition to their
impact in the physiological, behavioral, and welfare conditions in the animals reared in
captivity. In an overall view, pigments involved in fish coloration include melanin,
guanine and carotenoids. Melanin and guanine can be produced by most fish and hence
do not need to be supplemented in the diet, but fish are incapable of synthesizing
carotenoids de novo, and hence these pigments have to be obtained from dietary
sources. In this scenario, the green microalgae Dunaliella and Haematococcusrepresent
natural sources of two main carotenoids, β-carotene and astaxanthin, respectively.
These two pigments are responsible for pink/orange/reddish skin pigmentation in a
wide range of both food and aquarium fish species, as it has been already demonstrated
after dietary supplementation in commercially important fish. Moreover, high dietary
efficacy of Dunaliella and/or Haematococcus in natural color enhancement is based on
a range of scientific reports conducted in the most prominent aquarium fish species.
