Oxidative stress happens when antioxidant capabilities are overwhelmed by the burden
of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are produced by the own metabolism but can
be also induced by exogenous factors such as an inadequate diet with a low content in
antioxidants. The green microalgae Tetraselmis chuii has been widely employed as feed
for crustacean and fish larval development, and presents a balanced nutritional
composition containing vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids,
polyphenols and pigments. Moreover, when grown under industrial and patentprotected conditions, this microalgae species is capable of accumulating the highest
superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity found in the market, with more than 30,000 U/g
dry weight. SOD is the most powerful antioxidant against ROS, scavenging superoxide
anions, and thus protecting cell components from oxidative damage. In addition to this
role as a direct antioxidant, T. chuii has demonstrated to act as an indirect antioxidant
both in in vitro and in vivo approaches, inducing the own cellular antioxidant
mechanisms: SOD, glutathione peroxidase and catalase at both transcriptional level and
enzyme activities. Such effects seem to be mediated by activation of the master
transcription factor Nrf2, which is known to control the expression of hundreds of genes
playing a role in multiple cytoprotective pathways.
