Description

Pomacanthus maculosus, commonly known as the Yellowbar angelfish, is a large angelfish. As juveniles they're black with blue vertical stripes which are bend slightly backwards in the front half of the body, and forward in the back half of the body. Some stripes are dark blue, some light blue and some almost white in colour. As with most angelfishes, their adult appearance is totally different. Their body becomes solid blue, with one very broad yellow (but white and orange are also seen sometimes) vertical bar/moonshaped patch in the middle. Fine scribbled patterns appear on the back half of the body and these blue scribbles also show up in their yellow caudal fin, making it appear more green from far away. Above the head some large scales become dark blue.

Like all other angelfish it's hermaphroditic and the most dominant fish will turn into a male when there is no other male around. If you do consider adding them to your tank, do keep in mind that they are usually quite dominant towards other angelfishes especially other Pomacanthus and very aggressive towards other P. asfur unless a mated pair.
Most angelfish are not really reef safe and this one is no exception. As juveniles they mainly eat filamentous algae, but as adults sponges and tunicates are a staple part of their diet. Keeping them well fed seems to reduce the risk, so make sure to feed them a proper varied diet of algae and meaty foods to make them really happy. But do keep in mind that they may sooner or later start nipping/eating all sorts of corals (especially Zoanthus, LPS and clams). So best keep this fish in a fish-only tank or plan your corals well and accept the damage it can do.

This fish is Tank Bred and will adapt to your aquarium easier compared to a wild caught specimen!
